“The main science mega-project of the 2045 Initiative aims to create technologies enabling the transfer of a individual’s personality to a more advanced non-biological carrier, and extending life, including to the point of immortality.” – 2045 Initiative
The question, however, remains: How are these scientific discoveries and technological developments helping ensure that future methods of mind uploading and avatar designs are successful?
Holographic Computing: With the recent unveiling of the HoloLens by Microsoft, the future of holographic computing has emerged. With this technology people will be able to pull the digital world out into physical reality. From there, it’s only a matter of how you wish to use this technology. With holographic computing, you’ll be able to physically maneuver, and even modify, the digital world however you wish. From a medical standpoint, you’ll subsequently be able to create digital incarnations of bodily organs and physical features to acquire a closer look at your biological substrate. This will become our first encounter with our future digital avatars!
Virtual Haptic Gloves: As we reach into the virtual world and bring it out into the physical, the ability to actually feel these objects will be crucial in developing a sense of realness to our augmented reality. Using gloves that are attached with haptic sensors, we’ll be able to feel the physical texture of these virtual objects as if we’re actually touching matter itself. This is an important step towards developing our digital avatars, due to the fact that our world is going to consist of both virtual and material objects. To not be able to interact with these objects will completely destroy any sense of reality we have with them.
Telepresence Robots: We’ve had telepresence robots for a few years now, but only recently have we developed them to such an extent that we’re finally given a sense of actually being those robots. Using DORA (Dexterous Observational Roving Automaton), we’ve taken another crucial step at merging our consciousness into an artificial avatar. With DORA, we’re now able to move our head and eyes via the robotic avatar with the help of a virtual reality headset. The next step will be to emulate the rest of our bodily actions using robotic avatar systems.
Artificial Organ Transplants: With a third patient from France successfully receiving an artificial heart transplant, we’re steadily rising into a future where our entire body will be replaced for more efficient, artificial systems. Transferring our biological selves into digital or robotic avatars will be a huge feat to accomplish, of which will require crucial steps in between from now to then. The ability to replace our biological organs for artificial ones is definitely one of those steps. Eventually, we won’t simply be integrating technology into our biological substrate; rather we’ll become technology!
