Architecture of the Future: Semiotic Alpine Escape

By B.J. Murphy

Architecture of the 20th century might’ve been one of the greatest technological feats achieved by humanity, but architecture of the 21st century will make the 20th look like sand castles. That is, of course, the goal that is aimed by futuristic architects today. One in particular, Italian architect Armin Senoner, doesn’t just wish to envision futuristic architecture, like his Semiotic Alpine Escape, but wishes for everyone else to join in on the fun!

“In the modern age, with all its technological advancement, architects and designers have learned to move beyond traditional functionalism. We live now in a world where e.g. 3dprinting technology gives us the possibility to design and articulate things in a way and within a timeframe without any precedents. Whilst the design paradigm and actually seeing things getting real was once just meant for a few, nowadays pretty much everyone has access to both software and construction technology.” – Armin Senoner

Erected at 2,000 meters in height, the Semiotic Alpine Escape would be located in the Dolomites mountain range in northeastern Italy. This structure of the future would be a luxury hotel, with a ropeway station being used as a primer access point, which is designed specifically for an equilibrium of guests that vary in class status. The infrastructure would accommodate both winter and summer activities, in particular for sports.

Each section of the Semiotic Alpine Escape would be designed based on the class status of each guest. Keeping in mind the wealth distribution of its citizens, the hotel would be divided between three different subclassifications: economy, business, and superior. The design itself isn’t meant to be taken as a literal design, but rather a critical reflection of our current social establishment.
