Which is why Japanese design studio Takram decided to come up with a technological solution that’ll not only address hydration, but will subsequently turn us into Cyborgs. Say hello to Hydrolemic System!
“Developed by takram, Shenu: Hydrolemic System consists of a series of products including artificial organs to conserve the water usage of [the] human body. takram developed the products as part of [a] group exhibition for dOCUMENTA(13) in 2012, themed under water bottle for the future world of annihilation.” – Takram
These artificial organs consist of nasal cavity inserts, which inhibit the loss of water through exhalation, whereby moist air is condensed and returned upon inhalation; arterial-jugular heat exchangers, which produces electricity from excess body temperature to inhibit perspiration; the heat irradiant neck collar, which converts electrical energy generated by the exchangers back into heat and radiates it via polymicroporous titanium grills; and a urine concentrator, which addresses the fact that we lose most amounts of water through urination, by acting as a microcosmic water filtration and uric concentration plant.
Takram’s Hydrolemic System is revolutionary in the sense that it not only addresses environmental travesties via technological innovation, but subsequently redefines what it means to be human. We’ve grown accustomed to our biological limitations, leaving ourselves vulnerable to the unfortunate implications of natural disasters. The scenario in which Takram was tasked to address might be a fictional scenario, but it’s certainly not within the realm of impossibility, given the fact that we’re still combating climate change. As a result of this enemy of ours, we’re already witnessing the collapse of California via widespread drought and forest fires.
The task at hand should always be to ensure the safety of our species and our planet. Defeating climate change is certainly a formidable struggle, but one in which necessitates our utmost attention. But if we ever find ourselves in a situation similar to Takram’s cataclysmic scenario, at least we know that our species won’t go down without a fight. No matter what, we will transcend our biological limitations and rebel against the Grim Reaper itself!
