Being a connoisseur of sci-fi films I am acutely aware of digital effects when I’m watching a film. In fact I will go to a bad film as long as the special effects look amazing. Shameless I know what is a futurist to do? Nothing bothers me and my amygdala more than noticing bad special effects. By the way, why is it so hard to create a realistic WOLF? Anyone? So when I watched Looper I was extremely pleased. In fact I had to re-watch the film so that I could pay attention specifically to the ships, cities and techno gadgets. This brings me to my point. How much of what we experience when we watch television or film is actually a complete illusion now?
Our consciousness is evolving alongside our technologies. We know instinctively when something doesn’t look real. We can feel it. Our minds send up a red flag. But how accurate are our perceptions when something does fool our minds and visual systems? These days special effects act as a [easyazon-link asin=”0262692937″ locale=”us”] Turing Test [/easyazon-link] for the visual cortex and our consciousness!
