Given the fact that robots are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and will eventually occupy every home, every store, and every building on this planet, the question of whether or not us humans will consider these robots friends, if not more so, will be an important question to answer.
“People are social creatures who, without realizing it, synchronize their movements to fit in with friends, relatives, and colleagues. Watch a group of friends together and you’ll notice they walk in sync, and even talk like one another. Turns out that people prefer robots to respond to their behavior in the same manner and in real time, according to new research from the University of Hertfordshire, in England.” – IEEE

In other words, robots could become our future friends…they just have to act like us.
The ability to create friendship with robots will certainly be an important step for humankind, especially as we continue accelerating towards a new technological era. Of course, while the study does indeed show that humans are more than willing to interact with robots as long as they move and behave like us, I’m curious as to how this might change as humans begin integrating advanced technology into their biological substrate. Once humans make the transition towards Cyborgism, will our ability to interact and connect with more mechanical beings increase as a result?
