The Future This Week: CRISPR, Cryonics, and the Transhumanist Party

By B.J. Murphy

In The Future This Week, Serious Wonder gets active and organized in search of this week’s headlines of the future, from humans being genetically modified to combat cancer to the rise of the Transhumanist Party (USA). This week we’re given a glimpse of the future where our nightly skies will be filled with satellites by SpaceX and an increasing number of people rely on cryonics under the hope of someday conquering death.

Whether we’re combating death itself by means of gene-editing or via cryonics, there is one thing which is most certain about our future: it is going to be an indefinitely extended one! One could argue that all of our actions today in both science and technology are predicated on the pursuit of ending aging once and for all. A future where everyone has the choice on how long they wish to live and when they wish to die. It is then certainly unsurprising to see a political party rise which seeks to fight for indefinite life extension. Welcome to the future!
