Becoming the first mainstream automotive company to launch an augmented reality (AR) owner’s manual, Hyundai recently unveiled the Virtual Guide app, which is set to be released later this year. This comes as a follow-up from their iOS owner’s manual app in 2010 and its integration into the vehicle’s touchscreen in 2014.
“The Virtual Guide is aimed at educating our owners on how to use the functions and features of their vehicle. We modernized the idea of an owner’s manual to provide the highest-quality user experience for the growing population of tech savvy consumers.”
– Frank Herrara, Executive Vice President
of Hyundai Motor America
Hyundai’s use of AR as an owner’s manual is to attempt to help the younger generation acquire a better, more detailed grasp on the various difficult-to-use features known throughout modern vehicles today. Using two- and three-dimensional tracking technology, the Virtual Guide incorporates all of those features into a single, easy-to-use platform for the next generation of drivers, proving themselves more than capable at embracing the future.

Hyundai’s willingness to embrace advanced technologies such as AR should be a wakeup call for every other mainstream automotive company throughout the globe. Either you embrace the future and incorporate these technologies into the very fabric of your designs, or be thrown into the dustbin of history. AR will become one of the most used technologies throughout society, including but not limited to the automobile industry. From smart windows to holographic overlay screens, how you operate your future car will become far less physical and much more virtual.
