She is a musical futurist. ARTPOP is an “Esher” of double entendre and homophones. The lexical structure of ARTPOP goes way beyond where most pop music critics are willing to tread.
As a futurist and techno-philosopher, I wanted to gaze into the patterns of GAGA’s work. I researched her lyrics and references. Along the way, I have been entertained, shocked, and educated. I am amazed at her pain, her bravery, and her ability to tolerate foolish comparisons. I admire her brave heart. I’m inspired by her ability to take the pain. Like a pop crucifixion, cultural ignorance is a sharp nail.
As I float down this fantastic ARTPOP rabbit hole, I find an artist who has one singular goal. To change our consciousness. She holds an unfiltered metaphorical and symbolic mirror into the face of our culture. Do not blame GAGA if you don’t like what you see.
ARTPOP is like a DMT journey into the mind of culture. All the primal monkey brain behavior is being unveiled. Complex, sad, sick, disruptive, silly, mesmerizing, and exciting. The intersections are sharp, and the cognitive feedback loop moves at light speed.
The Song “ARTPOP” makes me think of the psychedelic French-Italian science fiction film Barbarella. There are several feminist and philosophical connections here. GAGA sings “My ARTPOP could mean anything” and I believe her. The observer effect anyone?
“DONATELLA” is filled with cultural signifiers and one of my favorite songs on ARTPOP. Rich with irony, she sings in a smart “Sinatra” voice “Tailor these clothes to fit your guilt.” And they will. They will sing and dance in a glittering guilt burka size zero.
On the surface, the song “FASHION” makes me think of Dianna Ross at studio 54, however, GAGA keeps repeating “fashion for fashion” or is she saying “fascion for fascion?” You can feel the pain, the ruse, the ambush that fame and fashion can be. She is giving us her best Diana Vreeland.

Only GAGA would give a nod to SUN RA and his cosmic philosophy. Afrofuturism deserves more attention. Space Is the Place in case you didn’t know.
I listened to ARTPOP at least 3 times in a row on iTunesRadio before writing this review. I’m sure I will find a white rabbit or two hiding out in ARTPOP in the next few weeks. ARTPOP and GAGA will no doubt elicit a strong reaction. She is a wild woman. She will not be controlled. Our culture is fighting this archetype. Culture will lose.
ARTPOP will be dismissed, loved, misunderstood, worshipped, and analyzed. As will every single one of us throughout our lives. Critics call GAGA bizarre and odd. She is, and I love it. I want her to break this dangerous banal mold of the sick pop princess. Women around the world need to see a woman who says it is ok to be yourself, show your flaws, experiment with reality.
If you want to see the future, look into a mirror.
