1. Transport Yourself with Holographic Telepresence
Star Trek fans rejoice: the next generation is here. We will soon have the capability to effectively communicate using holographic images; thus a device will transmit a three-dimensional moving image of you to your desired destination, and viewers will hear and see you, as if you were actually in the room. A British company called Musion has already had success “resurrecting” Tupac for a concert using similar technology, and researcher’s claim that such devices may be available as soon as next year.
2. Technology to Improve Sex
If you are human, chances are sex is an integral part of your existence. Hence, you’ll be happy to learn that technology hasn’t forgotten about enhancing our pleasure along with everything else. From Durex’s creation of “Fundawear”, vibrating underwear for women activated via IPhone, to Real Touch, USB- connected sex toys that allow for interactive cyber-sex, technology for sex enhancement is on the rise. In addition to toys and cyber-sex, a lot of emphasis has been on creating ‘fleshbots” or “sexbots”, who will eventually encompass your ideal mate in a life-sized robot to be used at your discretion. With the idea of virtual sweethearts like in the upcoming film “Her” starring Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johanson, don’t be surprised if someday soon you or someone you know would rather be making love to a “computer”.
3. Computers that “Think”
Researchers from Google were able to create a “neural network” in which a machine learning algorithm was able to identify objects without oversight; essentially thinking on its own. Additionally, IBM and Qualcomm, in conjunction with the Stanford research team, have designed neuromorphic processors that will be commercialized in 2014. This means tasks that used to require timely and detailed programming will now be automated, and the concept of “computer crashes” may be eradicated entirely.
4. First 3D Printed Human Liver
A company based in San Diego, California known as Organovo is confident that by next year they will be able to create an artificial liver via 3D printer. Nearly 18 people die every day while on the waiting list for an organ transplant; but with 3D printing, there might never be a list again. Imagine going to the doctor and being able to have your new heart, liver, or kidney printed for you the same day. No doubt, there may even be organs on stand-by for emergencies in hospitals around the world. This will inevitably save thousands of lives!
5. Will the Future Include Talking Dogs?
Many dog lovers would be overjoyed to know what their furry best friend was thinking about; however, unless you’re Dr. Doolittle, more than likely you just hear “woof woof” and take a guess. Well Indiegogo is currently working on a project called “No More Woof” that utilizes a device with EEG technology. They claim that very soon you will be able to hear your dog talk, small thoughts in the beginning, like ‘hungry’ or ‘tired’, but as the technology advances more complex thoughts will likely be communicated. More than one language will also be available in the future, so literally anyone will be able to have a conversation with their dog. Get ready to find out more about Fido than you every thought possible!
