Scientists from University of Technology in Vienna have established a new world record: quadrupling the potential of the powerful Quantum Cascade Laser. Essentially, the laser emits terahertz radiation, invisible energy waves that have the capability to penetrate a variety of materials and can detect an assortment of molecules. Similar to Star Trek’s tricorder device, the terahertz radiation can detect a range of chemicals, in addition to providing a safer route to medical imaging while delivering more detailed pictures. As the technology develops, more breakthroughs could occur in reviewing medical and technical data. In other words, your doctor may one day be using a tricorder type device to determine your diagnosis.
2. Reverse Microwave: Cool Your Drinks Fast!
For the longest time we’ve enjoyed the pleasure of heating nearly anything we desire in the ultimate invention of the microwave; but what about when you want something to be really cold again? For the time being our only option is waiting an hour or so for that something to cool in the refrigerator. However, that is all about to change with the creation of the reverse microwave. Known as V-Tex ,by Enviro-Cool Limited, this gadget will cool any beverage in a matter of seconds and is energy efficient and environmental friendly. Commercial and domestic versions are said to be released soon. Move over coolers, hello V-Tex! Watch video here.

The Unites States Army is very interested in further experimenting and developing TALOS or Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit. The TALOS is impenetrable to bullets and allows for soldiers to be stronger and faster, essentially making them “super” soldiers. The suit is even equipped with a biometric panel, similar to Iron Man’s, that monitors vitals, core temperature, and even hydration levels. Additionally, accompanying this “liquid armor” of bullet protection, TALOS will offer soldiers night goggles, and a specialized computer, providing updates and tactical insights. No additional information has been released on cost or availability for troops, but for better or worse, the “perfect” soldier may be in our near future.
4. Will Your Smart Watch Respond to Hand Gestures?
So you really want to sport a smartwatch, but don’t like the inconvenience of the small screen? Well thanks to researchers from University of California at Berkeley and Davis, your problem may be solved. Creators are working on a 3D gesture recognition chip that will allow users to simply make hand movements instead of actually having to touch screens. The technology is known as “Chirp” and designers hope that the chip will soon be available not only for smartphones, but for any electronic device that proves inconvenient to operate.

Have you ever wanted to upgrade your camera without having to replace your smartphone altogether? Or perhaps you never use your camera and would rather have more storage instead? The idea of Phoneblocks will allow you to do just that and more. Phoneblocks is an idea that has just recently taken off, thanks yet again to the notorious Kickstarter. In addition, Motorola has decided to work together with Phoneblocks to begin “Project Ara”, which hopes to begin releasing developer kits before the end of the year. With Phoneblocks, getting a pulse oximeter on your smartphone will be as easy as moving blocks! Watch promotional video here.
