Monday Marvels: This Week’s Top 5 Marvels
September 9th -16th
1. Robo Bugs for Your Brain
The disgusting, slimy, creepy crawlies might just one day save your life. J. Marc Simard of the University of Maryland School of Medicine is working on the first ever “robot maggot” prototype designed to eat away brain tumors. These robotic maggots will allegedly be released into patient’s brains during an MRI so that doctors can observe and direct the maggots to the desired location. Upon further testing, these “bugs” might soon be at a hospital near you.

That’s right folks go get your IPhones, or at least have then pre-ordered by now. You now have a rainbow array of options to choose from, so if your favorite color is green, there might still be some in stock if you check your local and online retailers now. Moreover, the rumors are indeed true about the fingerprint scanner for the IPhone 5s, and you can even get one in a gold “champagne” color to match with all your “bling”. What IPhone color will you choose?
3. Now You Can Truly Own Your Twitter Account
Or better yet, you can own several thousand Twitter accounts if you so wish. Twitter officially “Tweeted” their plans to offer public shares and once available may be the biggest launch in the stock market since Facebook. Though nothing is formally disclosed, analysts project that Twitter will have about $580 million in online sales this year and could rise to a 1 billion in the next year. If you missed the Facebook boom, perhaps it’s time to invest in the next big thing in social media.

Thirty-six years old and launched in September of 1977, Voyager 1 has finally reached interstellar space. For everyone who isn’t a NASA Junkie, that means that the space craft has just reached the region of space that is outside of the sun’s influence, known as the “heliosphere”. What does this mean for you and me? Well, it means that if there is life in other galaxies, or just something really amazing beyond our solar system, we might just get to hear about it within our lifetime.
5. Have You Ever Wanted to Forget the Past?
Scientists from Scripps Research Institute of Florida have been able to isolate memories in mice by suppressing a chemical related to the process of forming memories. They have been successful in eliminating harmful or addictive memories without affecting the other important ones. This could mean a huge breakthrough for those suffering from severe drug addictions or PTSD. And for everyone else, we may one day have the opportunity to eradicate our worst memories and literally forget the past.
