Roombots are a departure from the Transmaterial trend I’ve been writing about at Serious Wonder. But they are quite the transgressive design.
Roombots are basically a set of robotic building blocks that are designed to create and recreate adaptive furniture.
The project was funded by the Swiss National Centre of Competence and Research, an hilariously thorough name for an organization.
The roombots behave almost like self-aware LEGOs. Interacting with connector units, the roombots can attach and detach as necessary, creating completely new interior environments.
Just watch what the roombots can do, and I’ll leave the rest of the awe unsaid.
FUTURE IMPLICATIONS
Applying roombots to your life means that your interior environments, bedrooms, offices, and the like, now have the potential to adapt constantly. Your built environment will grow like organisms. A desk takes on the persona of a living patch of moss. A chair becomes a tree. How would you imagine yourself using roombots?
