Serious Wonder Sunday: Are We Simulated?
I’m starting a new Sunday thought experiment series called Serious Wonder Sunday. Each Sunday I will post an idea, question or thought experiment. The point of this series is to get you to think deeply about future concepts.
However, I want you to share these ideas with your family and friends. Ask them to comment and share. This is not a debate. There are no right or wrong ideas here. This is a space for philosophical play. Think of it as a playground for ideas and the mind. The point is to contemplate all of the implications of the idea. Feel free to comment below or on our Facebook page.
Some questions to wonder about…. Are we living inside a simulation? Is the cosmos digital? Who are the simulators? How many simulations are there? Will we simulate AI beings in the future? Will these simulated AI beings create new AI simulations? Can we game the simulation or control it? Do we jump to a new level of simulation when we die in this simulation? Are we simulated avatars of advanced beings that have slipped into a massive black hole?
Astrophysicist, and Nobel Prize winner George Smoot talks about “Simulation Deniers,” solipsism, and philosophical zombies in the video below.
